A tank container or tanktainer is an intermodal container for the transport of liquids, gases and powders as bulk cargo. It is built to the ISO standards, making it suitable for different modes of transportation; as such, it is also called an ISO tank. Both hazardous and non-hazardous products can be transported in tank containers.

Gas containers sometimes have multiple bottles instead of one large tank.A tank container is a vessel of stainless steel surrounded by an insulation and protective layer of usually polyurethane and aluminum. The contents of the tank range from 17,500 to 26,000 liters (3,800 to 5,700 imp gal; 4,600 to 6,900 U.S. gal). There are both smaller and larger tank containers, which usually have a size different from the ISO standard sizes. For example, there are some 27,000 liters (5,900 imp gal; 7,100 U.S. gal) and above litre tank containers in the European swap body fleets in Europe but they are not used on international business only on intra European traffic. The trade organization ITCO estimates that as of January 1st, 2018 the global fleet of tank containers stands at 552,000 units. Most of these tank containers are owned by operators and leasing companies.

Specifications

75 of these vans were built between 1927-29 - being assigned the generic code LHG, which at the time, denoted being with lavatory facilities between the two passenger compartments. These vans were used in block stock (sheep and cattle) trains having accommodation for accompanying drovers. In 1935, these vans were re-coded as SHG. As built, the LHG/SHGs had screw couplers, 2SE bogies and there were windows in the end of the guard's compartment. During the late 1950s these vans were rebuilt with the end windows, dog boxes, end steps being removed and the mushroom roof vents replaced with torpedo style ventilators.

With the opening of the Sydney-Melbourne Standard Gauge line in 1962, additional brake vans were required for the high-speed freight services. 36 SHGs were fitted with auto-couplers and 2AE bogies in the mid-1960s (1964-65) and re-coded BHG. In 1969, there were 27 SHGs and 30 BHGs still in service.

Upon nationalisation in 1947 the newly formed British Railways saw the need to standardise their passenger stock, having inherited a patchwork of coaches of all different specifications from each of the big four who were in turn sometimes running a wide variety of stock from their constituent companies. This new coach would have to be perfect for every possible use that the new BR may need it for, which could be tricky when the coach would need to be used on high speed summer boat trains in the south and cold winter services in the north of Scotland.

These coaches would be constructed from 1951 to 1963 with only one significant change made during this time, a swapping of bogies in the last gasps of the Mark 1s build cycle. The Mark 1 coach as it would be designated was designed to be a ‘go anywhere, do anything’ coach utilising the best features from each of the big four coaches the company had inherited. The Mark One coaches were stronger than the designs they replaced, with their introduction being commended in rail safety reports. These coaches would be in stock in one form or another in the UK until 2010, when the Mark One based Class 421 was withdrawn from service on the Lymington Branch Line.

Specifications
