Hornby R3815 O Gauge 2710 MR No.1 Centenary Year Limited Edition 1920 Locomotive

With the Great War over and German toy trains not being imported due to the bitterness towards the vanquished, Frank Hornby saw an opportunity to expand his manufacturing business into the production of toy trains and consequently in 1920 he launched Hornby Trains.

Frank Hornby’s first British made Hornby ‘0’ gauge locomotives were produced in tinplate and assembled using nuts and bolts at the Meccano Ltd. factory situated in Binns Road, Liverpool. The first locomotive design of this construction was a simple generic style 0-4-0 locomotive using a clockwork mechanism and connected to a simple 4 wheel tender.

The No.1 0-4-0 Hornby ‘0’ Gauge locomotive design featured cylinders and connecting rods, plus brass handrail knobs. Also, all variants were fitted with cylinders with the bodies having an enamelled finish.

Inspired by the railway companies of the day, the first four tinplate ‘0’ gauge Hornby Trains locomotives produced respectively in 1920 were liveried in Midland Railway (MR) Maroon, London North Western Railway (LNWR) Black, Caledonian Railway (CR) Blue and Great Northern (GN) Green. These locomotives continued to be produced until 1923.

The four liveried Hornby Train replicas, using where possible the original Frank Hornby design have been produced as close to the original model specifications as possible but in place of a clockwork mechanism a 12vDC electric motor has been fitted allowing for three rail operation.

A Collector's Piece

Only 100 of these '0' Gauge highly collectable but functioning limited edition models have been exclusively produced in four liveries, reminiscent of the original tinplate locomotive produced by Frank Hornby in 1920, with each model authenticated by an individually signed and numbered certificate.

Collectors who order more than one design of these limited-edition products will receive the matching certificate number for each item making these an extra special addition to your highly exclusive collection. Serious collectors would be proud to own all four of these amazing collector pieces.

Hornby R30346 S&DR 0-4-0 Locomotion No. 1 2014 - 2024 Locomotive

'Locomotion' No. 1 was an early example of ingenuity for the use of motive power on British railways. The Stockton & Darlington Railway ordered the engine in 1824 after its construction by the pioneering railway engineers, Robert Stephenson & Company, in Newcastle as an 0-4-0 locomotive in 1825. They initially ordered four engines, including 'Locomotion'. The fifth engine was a different design and completed in 1827. The original nickname of 'Locomotion' was 'Active', and this is how it was referred to until the summer of 1833 when it became 'Locomotion'. The engine only gained its number in 1827.

The locomotive made its historic debut on 27th September 1825 for the opening of the first public railway, the S&DR. It was driven by George Stephenson, and it hauled eleven wagons of coal, the carriage 'Experiment' and twenty wagons carrying many passengers in a world-first. After its debut on the S&DR, 'Locomotion' continued to run as a mineral locomotive until it was withdrawn from service in 1841.

It was decided that 'Locomotion' would be preserved for future generations to enjoy, and in 1857, the locomotive was restored at Shildon Works to resemble its original appearance. It was then mounted on a display plinth at North Road Station in Darlington. The locomotive visited various locations around the world and was displayed in places such as Chicago and Paris. In 1883, when 'Locomotion' journeyed to Chicago, it acquired a bell with the legend “Stockton & Darlington Railway”. The 'Locomotion' was also displayed in Liverpool, Newcastle, Edinburgh, York, Manchester, London, Darlington and Shildon. In 1892, 'Locomotion' was relocated to Darlington's Bank Top station. In 1924 and 1961, further restoration of the locomotive occurred at Darlington Works.

For most of its preserved life, the locomotive was based at the Head of Steam Museum in Darlington. 'Locomotion' was moved from there to the Locomotion Museum at Shildon (where it remains today). It was agreed with Darlington Borough Council that 'Locomotion' will be displayed for six months in Head of Steam in the first half of 2025, the 200th anniversary of the S&DR.

This 'Locomotion' No. 1 model reflects its preserved status and features the 1883 incorporated bell, the single chimney, the coal detail in the tender and green etched nameplates incorporating 'Locomotion'. A wood grain print is used to represent the wooden boiler barrel of the locomotive. This model is DCC-ready and is compatible with our HM7000 Next 18-Pin decoder.

Specifications

Hornby R30215 OO HM Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee HST Train Pack

The Platinum Jubilee

The HM Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee HST Train Pack locomotive units are dressed in a fictional livery to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen. Both power and dummy unit are able to accept an 8 pin decoder to allow for control of directional lighting and sound. The power car is fitted with a strong 5 pole motor, flywheel and dual bogie drive.

The Queen's Platinum Jubilee 2022

Reimagining an HST unit with a fictional celebratory Platinum Jubilee livery, this impressive train pack commemorates the occasion in the fashion of the LNER before nationalisation.

The Class 43 power units in Platinum Jubilee silver feature blue trim livery with matching First Class and two First Class Restaurant sliding door Mk3 coaches (available separately).

Product Info

The Class 43 HST is a legend of the rails, the fastest diesel locomotive to ever operate in the United Kingdom. Since 1975 these powerful Bo-Bo locomotives have moved passengers across the country for business and for leisure, most ironically in their various BR guises. The Class 43 persists to this day as a stalwart of the rails under various operators including the mainline serving GWR, mainline maintaining Network Rail and some private operators such as Locomotive Services Limited on their Blue Pullman services.

This train pack, designed to commemorate the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II depicts the Class 43 as they have never been seen before, in a livery questioning exactly how the legendary LNER would celebrate this special occasion if they were still operating, and nationalisation had never occurred. It would be nice to think that if the big four were never nationalised that we would still be able to see steam regularly on the mainline however this view is shrouded in nostalgia and ignores the operational benefits that diesel locomotives bring. If the LNER operated continuously into the modern era, this may be how they would mark this special occasion.

The power cars in this set, while adorned with numbers that have been assigned to full size units, have had numbers chosen to celebrate prominent years of the queen’s reign. 43052 has been chosen as part of the numbering pattern for the full size examples and 52 for the year of the coronation, and 43022 follows the same pattern but for this very special year of Her Majesties reign

Specifications

Hornby TT3001M TT BR Class 08 0-6-0 08489

The Class 08 will go down in history as one of the most dependable shunters ever built. While all Class 08 shunters were built by British Railways they are actually based on an earlier LMS design. With 996 of these shunters built, they are still a common sight on mainline yards and sidings, and a common sight on heritage railways, with the number preserved almost outnumbering those currently in service.

With no thought given to aesthetics, the Class 08 was a utilitarian workhorse of the railways, with its longevity speaking volumes to its performance. While not intended for mainline duties, some of the Class in the south could be seen trundling up the mainline if there was a short distance between yards that stock needed to be moved between, assuming no express services needed to occupy the track at the time.

Built as D3604 in 1957, this example locomotive would gain its TOPS number of 08489 in March 1974. 08489 was withdrawn from service in 2004 from its home at Motherwell and was cut up by TJ Thomson of Stockton in June of 2009.
