$

The M60 is a main battle tank developed by the United States as a successor to the M46, M47, and M48 in order to combat the new T-54A tank fielded by the Soviet Union. The M60A1 tank is an improved mass-produced version of the M60, with production beginning in 1960, four years after the prototype of the original M60 was completed.

The turret was changed from the M60's "turtleshell" shape to a thicker shape with front armor and a wider internal volume. The tank's excellent maneuverability, powerful engine and 105mm tank gun L7A1 made it an excellent tank with a good balance of offense and defense; it has become the standard main battle tank for the U.S. military and other Western countries. About 20,000 of this tank have been made, and it has become the best-selling tank.

Takom's kit features a main hatch that opens and closes after assembly, with crawler belt tracks, clear and photo-etched parts, and markings for five versions. Please note that figures are not included.

Takom 2079 1/35 Israeli Main Battle Tank Merkava 1 Hybird
33.00
$

Named after the ancient Hebrew war chariot, Israel’s Merkava tank was forged by experience on the battlefield as well as the painful political realities facing the Jewish state. After enthusiastically providing the UK with valuable data gathered during 2 years of intense evaluation of the Chieftain tank, The Israelis were denied the weapon after political objections by wealthy Arab states resulted in the British cancellation of their agreement in 1969. This sudden turn of events instigated the ultimate decision in Israel to rely on themselves and produce a local tank.

Drawing on experience gained operating U.S. & British tanks in heavy combat, the Merkava was designed after the Yom Kippur war of 1973, and after several prototypes were tested and improved, the new tank went into production in 1977. Design features included a troop compartment in the rear accessed by a unique split hatch reminiscent of APC’s, a 908 Hp Teledyne Continental AVDS 1790-6A diesel engine mounted in the front of the hull for increased crew protection from the front, and a flat, arrow-shaped turret housing a powerful license-produced fully-stabilized version of the US rifled 105-mm M68 tank gun. Up to 62 rounds can be carried, including APFSDS, HEAT, HE-FRAG, and smoke rounds. Secondary armament comprised of two US 7.62 mm machine-guns and a third heavy Browning .50 caliber could be mounted on top of the commander cupola. An external 60 mm mortar could be fired by an operator from the nearby hatch. The tank features a Laser Range Finder and a digital fire control system, and enjoys NBC protection and an automatic fire extinguishing system. The Merkava can carry up to 10 fully equipped troops, as well as its crew of 4, consisting of the driver, gunner, loader, and commander. A total of 250 tanks were produced until 1981.

The Merkava Mk.1 saw combat in Lebanon in 1982, and began featuring upgrades which ultimately led to the more advanced Mk.II. These interim tanks became unofficially known as ‘Mk.I Hybrid’. Improvements adopted by the Merkava Mk.I were the modification of the shot trap beneath the turret bustle and introduction of heavy steel balls suspended by chains, the mortar position was relocated, and armor protection was generally improved.

Features

Takom brings us a painstakingly detailed model kit of the Merkava Mk. 1 Hybrid tank! The main hatch can be assembled opened or closed, and easy-to-assemble link-and-length tracks are included, as is a jig for assembly. Also includes clear parts, decals for two marking versions, and photo-etched parts.
