Classic Carlectables 18753 1/18 Ford XA Falcon RPO83 Lime Glaze

Early in 1972 Ford released the XA GT Falcon in sedan and hardtop versions. It was the first Falcon to be totally designed by Australians, as production of the Falcon in the US had ceased some 18 months earlier. The XA was the biggest Falcon yet, with the boldest styling, designed for wider appeal with its less aggressive look and creature comforts. The hardtop was preferred for racing as its bulging rear flanks accommodated wider tyres.
Ford built 891 hardtops between July 1972 and September 1973, including the construction of 129 RPO83 coupes. The GT Specials - that’s their official title - were Regular Production Option 83 on Ford’s options list for Falcon GTs.
The biggest change on the RPO83 to the normal GT was the fitting of a huge 780cfm (cubic feet per minute) four barrel Holley carburettor and (hidden away under the V-banks) fabricated exhaust extractors. These added 30-40bhp to the existing 300bhp for much improved performance. Other changes included a modified sump with additional baffles and a manual choke. They used most of the bolt-on engine components intended for the Phase IV GT-HO - the “Supercar” killed by political and public pressure before it went into production in 1972.
The new model could run the quarter in the high 14s and had a top speed of around 140mph (225kph).
The RPO83 was indistinguishable externally from the normal GTs, which was a clear indication that Ford was anxious to avoid any hint of the “Supercar” label being attached to the new model. Inside the only way you could pick the GT Special was by the manual choke. The hardtop eventually became even more famous as the basis for the “Mad Max” supercar in the film of the same name.

Plucky privateer, Allan Grice, made a racing career out of being a thorn in the side of wealthier, factory-backed outfits.
For the 1978 Bathurst 1000 he teamed up with Formula 5000 driver John Leffler and they made an instant impact by qualifying for the Hardies Heroes Top 10 shootout. The number 6 Holden A9X Torana was only able to position itself in 7th place on the starting grid for the Great Race with a lap time of 2:25.950.
Holden A9X Toranas took the top two places in Australia’s premier race for “production” saloons. After holding second place during the early stages, Peter Brock and his co-driver Jim Richards went on to dominate the endurance race around the daunting, four-mile Mount Panorama circuit at Bathurst. At the finish, their Torana was over a lap clear of the similar car shared by Allan Grice and John Leffler, Murray Carter and Graeme Lawrence were the first Ford crew home, bringing their Falcon into third place three laps behind the winners.

The Grand Sport Rally Pack offered by Ford was a convenient factory option designed to infuse a dash of sportiness into a variety of models, spanning from the XW to XC series. With a simple tick on the order form, customers could imbue their new Falcon with several sporty enhancements, without committing to the expense of purchasing the GT model. This package included distinctive GS side stripes and badging, along with the emblematic GS insignia embellishing a three-spoke, deep-dished steering wheel. The interior received a significant upgrade with the inclusion of a GT dash, boasting a comprehensive array of instruments such as speedometer, tachometer, odometer, oil pressure, water temperature, and fuel gauges, further enhancing the car's performance-oriented aura. Additionally, stainless steel wheel covers provided a touch of refinement to the exterior.

Originally available for Falcon 500, Futura, and Fairmont sedans and wagons, the Grand Sport option package evolved over time, incorporating additional features such as a sunroof and a stereo radio/tape player into the general options list. However, the highlight for performance enthusiasts was undoubtedly the availability of a potent 250hp two-barrel carburetor-equipped Cleveland version of the 351ci V8 engine, offering an exhilarating driving experience.

Ford marketed the Grand Sport as a canvas for customization, encouraging buyers to "Make up your own Grand Sport." While it may not have exuded the same allure as the GT model, the Grand Sport Rally Pack provided a distinct alternative for budget-conscious consumers seeking a blend of style and performance.
