Hornby R30196 OO RailRoad Plus BR InterCity Class 31 A1A-A1A 31454 The Heart of Wessex

73.00 $

The British Rail Class 31 diesel locomotives, also known as the Brush Type 2 and originally as Class 30, were built by Brush Traction from 1957-62. They were numbered in two series, D5500-D5699 and D5800-D5862. Construction of the first locomotive was completed in the final week of September 1957, and the handing-over took place on 31 October.

The first Class 31 entered service in November 1957, after the launch of the Class 20 locomotive and was one of the Pilot Scheme locomotives ordered by British Railways to replace steam traction. 31454 has the main benefit of being a 31/4 that features electric train heating. This allows the locomotive to heat passenger trains, an absolute essential for winter train services.

No. 31454 ‘The Heart of Wessex’ was built by Brush Traction in 1960 and its works number was 254. The locomotive entered service on 29 September 1960 under its pre-TOPS number, D5654, and painted green with white bodyside bands at the base and middle of the body. It was allocated to Finsbury Park shed (34G) at the start of its working life. On 18 November 1967, the locomotive was reclassified from a Class 30/2 to a Class 31/1.

EQ Brakes were fitted on 30 October 1970. March 1974 saw a renumbering change to 31228 under TOPS. The headcode box was modified to include black blinds with two marker lights in February 1978. By April 1982, a further modification was made when the steam heat boiler was isolated.

Quite a few renumbering changes occurred with the locomotive being numbered 31454 on 29 October 1984, 31554 on 30 April 1990 and back to 31454 on 1 February 2002. After its renumbering to 31454, the locomotive was reallocated to Crewe Diesel (CD) on 15 May 1988.

Fragonset purchased several Class 31s from EWS to use as part of their fleet in 1998. 31454 was painted in an InterCity Swallow livery and carried both the InterCity and Fragonset logos on its bodysides. While sporting this livery, the locomotive was named ‘The Heart of Wessex’ in August 2004, until the nameplates were removed in September 2008.

In November 2013, the locomotive was withdrawn from service. It joined Wensleydale Railway’s home fleet in 2020, with the announcement that a private individual purchased a locomotive, Class 31/4 No. 31454. In 2021, the locomotive was stored at The Shires Removal Group in Kinsley and soon after, Nemesis Rail acquired the preserved Class 31 to be stored at Burton-on-Trent.

Specification

Item Length - Without Packaging (cm): 22.5

Item Height - Without Packaging (cm): 11.2

Item Width - Without Packaging (cm): 36.2

Item Weight - Without Packaging: 0.68

Item Scale: 1/76 Scale 00 Gauge

Finish: Painted

Colour: Multi

DCC Status: DCC Ready 8 pin socket

Operator: BR

Designer: Brush Traction

Livery: BR Network SouthEast

Minimum Curve (mm): Radius 2

Motor: 5 Pole Skew wound

Number of Parts: 1

Class: Class 31

Hornby R30178 OO RailRoad Plus DB Class 67 Bo-Bo 67029 Royal Diamond

62.00 $

Class 67 locomotives are a class of Bo-Bo diesel-electric locomotives which were built for the English Welsh & Scottish Railway (EWS) between 1999 and 2000 by Alstom at Meinfesa in Valencia, Spain with drive components (engine, generator and traction motors) from General Motors' Electro-Motive Division. The bodyshell is a monocoque load bearing Alstom design, the bogies are an "H" frame Alstom design, the engine, traction motors and control electronics are GM-EMD products, and the same as used in the Class 66. Unlike the Class 66, the traction motors are frame mounted rather than axle hung to reduce unsprung mass and the gear ratio is increased allowing higher speeds. The cab design has a central driving position. The locomotives are able to supply Electric Train Supply for passenger train heating and air-conditioning, and are equipped for buffer and screw coupling and also coupling via a buckeye coupler attached on a swing arm mount.Initially the class were used primarily on mail trains. In June 2003 EWS lost the Royal Mail mail train contract, with services diminishing to complete cessation in March 2004.The locomotives have since been used by First ScotRail on the Caledonian Sleeper on non-electrified lines north of Edinburgh. In April 2015, GB Railfreight commenced a contract to haul the Caledonian Sleeper with 67004 repainted and renamed for use on the service. When GB Railfreight started to provide the trains and crews for the Serco franchise in 2015, it was planned to use rebuilt Class 73/9s.The first of these came into service in February 2016. But the Class 67s continued to be used on some services for another couple of years.Class 67s are also used as Thunderbird rescue locomotives, for failed trains on the East Coast Main Line, on some freight trains, and for use on chartered tourist trains. Two locomotives were assigned to, and received special liveries for use with the Royal Train from 2003, and a third had a commemorative jubilee livery applied for use with the Royal Train during the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II in 2012. Wearing the DB Schenker silver livery Royal Diamond continues to be in service to this day.

Specification

Item Length - Without Packaging (cm): 36.5

Item Height - Without Packaging (cm): 5.9

Item Width - Without Packaging (cm): 11.2

Item Weight - Without Packaging: 0.87

Item Scale: 1:76 Scale 00 Gauge

Finish: Painted

Colour: Silver

DCC Status: DCC Ready 8 pin socket

Operator: Deutsche Bahn

Designer: Alston Meinfesta

Livery: DB Silver

Minimum Curve (mm): Radius 2

Motor: 5 Pole Skew wound

Number of Parts: 1

Class: Class 67

Hornby R3978 OO LNER Class W1 Hush Hush Streamlined 4-6-4 10000

158.00 $

Having completed nearly 90,000 miles of test running since new, Sir Nigel Gresley's W1 4-6-4HP 10000 entered Darlington Works on 21 August 1935 for what was anticipated to be a major overhaul and modification. During this period Gresley decided that it was time to rebuild 10000 as a three cylinder locomotive with a conventional firetube boiler and 10000 was moved to Doncaster Works on 13 October 1936, the first drawing for the modification being prepared at the end of November.

When 10000 was finally released from Doncaster Works in November 1937, it was a significantly different locomotive; being fitted with a diagram 111 boiler that was very similar to the diagram 108 boiler fitted to 2006 Wolf of Badenoch, and with a streamlined casing to the same pattern as the A4 class. As many components as possible from the original W1 were used in the rebuild, including the frames, which were shortened by 1½ feet at the front end. Other items, where needed, were sourced from the A4 class, the A3 class or, like the front bogie, from the B17 and an experimental double Kylchap blastpipe and chimney was fitted.

The cab, while similar to that of the A4 class, was considerably longer and this led to the retained original tender's coal delivery chute having to be lengthened to compensate for the extra distance from the firebox doors. The original tender was retained, but with superficial modifications, such as to the curvature of the front plates and the addition of streamlined plating to the front and rear, although this was partially removed just a year later, in 1938.

Up to the outbreak of war in 1939, and during the war years, 10000 worked mainly on Kings Cross main line duties and with its power and smooth riding it was a popular engine with the LNER's drivers, though less so with the firemen due to the distance between the shovelling plate and the firehole door. The locomotive also became more 'fitter' friendly after April 1942 when the skirting was removed from ahead and behind the outside cylinders to improve access in wartime conditions. Post war, at the time of nationalisation and now numbered 60700, the corridor tender was swapped for the streamlined non-corridor tender from 60004 William Whitelaw and the locomotive was engaged in more varied duties, working occasional passenger services to Leeds and Cambridge from Kings Cross alongside the occasional 'lodging' turns to Newcastle.

Following allocation to Doncaster on 25 October 1953, 60700 became a more frequent visitor to Leeds and also worked turns to Sheffield, as well as Doncaster to Peterborough passenger services and various braked goods trains. In a similar circumstance to 10000 never receiving its proposed name of British Enterprise in November 1929, 60700 never received its intended name of Pegasus, for which the nameplates were cast on 13 April 1951.

Specification

Item Length - Without Packaging (cm): 30.7

Item Height - Without Packaging (cm): 5

Item Width - Without Packaging (cm: 3.5

Item Weight - Without Packaging: 0.36

Item Scale: 1:76 Scale 00 Gauge

Finish: Painted

Colour: Grey

Gauge: OO

DCC Status: DCC Ready 8 pin socket

Operator: LNER

Designer: Gresley

Wheel Configuration: 2-6-4

Livery: LNER Photographic Grey

Minimum Curve (mm): Radius 2

Motor: 5 Pole Skew wound

Number of Parts: 1

141.00 $

The Class 08, 0-6-0 diesel electric shunter which was based on the prototype LMS designs, became British Railways' largest fleet of locomotives. These locomotives were constructed between 1953 and 1962 at Crewe, Darlington, Derby and Doncaster.

The class, which includes a number of Class 09 locomotives, has a single cab at the No.1 end and a front section that houses the power unit, generator and control equipment. Class 08 shunters are powered by an English Electric 350hp, 6KT engine and have a maximum speed of 15 - 20mph. The Class once numbered in excess of 1,000 with approximately 300 remaining in service today and still represents the mainstay of the UK's shunting power.

The standard Class 08 locomotives are in operation in most if not all areas of the UK and are expected to remain in service for many years to come. They are employed mainly as shunting units in marshalling yards and shunting depots but are also used occasionally for short trip workings.

Locomotive No. D03882 was built in May 1960 at Crewe Works and spent the first 12 years of its life assigned to engine sheds in Scotland. By 1974 the locomotive had been relocated to Colchester and was given a TOPS number of 08715. In 1993 it was repainted in a distinctive bright orange livery before being taken out of service under EWS ownership in 1997.

Specifications

Item Length - Without Packaging (cm): 12.4

Item Height - Without Packaging (cm): 5

Item Width - Without Packaging (cm): 3.5

Item Weight - Without Packaging: 0.18

Item Scale: 1:76 Scale 00 Gauge

License: No

Finish: Painted

Colour: Yellow

Gauge: OO

DCC Status: DCC Ready 8 pin socket

Operator: BR

Designer: BR

Livery: BR Yellow

Minimum Curve (mm): Radius 1

Motor: 5 Pole Skew wound

Number of Parts: 1

Class: Class 08
