The UK variants of the Class 66 will not be fitted with traction tyres, but tyred wheelsets are available as accessories.
European variants will be fitted with one traction tyre per bogie ex-works.

History

The Class 66 is one of the most ubiquitous diesel classes in the UK. 480 examples were built for the UK market with additional examples being imported from other countries pools to bolster the amount in service in the UK. The Class 66 is a progression of the privately commissioned Class 59 that Foster Yeoman had constructed to replace their aging and failing BREL locomotives. The Class 66 shares the same body as the 59 but has uprated internals.

In May 1996 EWS placed an order for 250 units to be built in London, Ontario. These would set EWS back £375 million, with the first units arriving relatively quickly in early 1998. The locomotives would be in service from the point they touched down at Newport Docks, with the locomotives shipped already filled with water and fuel. The last such example arrived in the UK in spring 2016.

Class 66 number 66714 entered service in 2003 after arriving in the UK from Canada earlier in the same year. The locomotive became part of the GB Railfreight fleet immediately upon its arrival and has remained on their roster ever since introduction. It is one of their over 100 strong fleet that can often be seen hauling heavy goods trains around the national network. The locomotive was named almost upon its introduction, carrying the name ‘Cromer Lifeboat’ in honour of the lifeboat station of the same name.

Specification

Item Length - Without Packaging (cm): 17.4

Item Height - Without Packaging (cm): 3.3

Item Width - Without Packaging (cm): 2.3

Item Weight - Without Packaging: 0.18

Item Scale: 1:120 Scale

Finish: Painted

Colour: Red

Gauge: TT

DCC Status: Next 18 Socket (NEM 662)

Operator: GBRf

Designer: English Electric

Wheel Configuration: Co-Co

Livery: GBRf Blue

Minimum Curve (mm): Radius 2

Motor: 5 Pole

Number of Parts: 1

Class: Class 66

Hornby R30180 OO RailRoad Plus BR InterCity Class 37 Co-Co 37251 The Northern Lights

71.00 $

The British Rail Class 37 is a diesel-electric locomotive. Also known as the English Electric Type 3, and by some railway enthusiasts as 'tractors' due to their agricultural sound, the class was ordered as part of the British Rail modernisation plan. They were numbered in two series, D6600–D6608 and D6700–D6999.The Class 37 became a familiar sight on many parts of the British Rail network, in particular forming the main motive power for InterCity services in East Anglia and within Scotland. They also performed well on secondary and inter-regional services for many years. The class was designed for both passenger and freight work. Many of the original locomotives were fitted with boilers for steam heating. With the withdrawal of many Type 2 and Type 3 locomotives in the 1980s the 37s were selected as the standard Type 3 and many of the fleet were given a heavy overhaul to prolong their life into the 1990s and beyond. Some were fitted with electrical train heating (ETH) equipment in the 1980s to become the 37/4 sub-class, initially for use on the West Highland Line, the Welsh Marches line and South Wales - Bristol area services and Far North Lines but later seeing use in north/mid Wales and occasionally the West Country. In 2010, they were used on passenger services on the Cumbrian Coast line and Wherry lines. Class 37 locomotives have proved to be very popular, with many examples saved for preservation on heritage railways as well by enthusiast groups. A staple of the Hornby line, who produced the first version of the BR Class 37 in Dublo back in 1965.

Specification

Item Length - Without Packaging (cm): 25.1

Item Height - Without Packaging (cm): 5

Item Width - Without Packaging (cm): 3.5

Item Weight - Without Packaging: 0.23

Item Scale: 1:76 Scale 00 Gauge

Finish: Painted

Colour: Multi

DCC Status: DCC Ready 8 pin socket

Operator: BR

Designer: Brush Traction

Livery: BR InterCity Swallow

Minimum Curve (mm): Radius 2

Motor: 5 Pole Skew wound

Number of Parts: 1

Class: Class 37
