With the introduction of these locomotives a wide spread reduction of the NSW locomotive fleet had begun. The first casualties were the veteran fleet of 44 class Alco’s, then the 45 and 442 classes along with the Mark I 48 class. Further reductions to the locomotive occurred with the withdrawals of the 422 and 49 classes.

This overall fleet reduction reduced the average age of Freight Rail’s locomotive fleet from over twenty five year old to approximately ten.

These locomotives have travelled all over NSW and have ventured into Queensland and Victoria on intermodal freight services, and in South Australia on the Leigh Creek coal service. They are currently seen on both coal and wheat services all over the state, through Sydney, and the occasional local trip train around the Sydney metropolitan area.

On Track Models is pleased bring you this highly desired locomotive as a highly detailed model in HO Scale.

The Class 67's were constructed by Alstom Meinfesa in Valencia between 1999 and 2000 for EWS. No. 67007 is operated by DB Cargo UK. The Class 67 locomotive was painted in a Queen's Platinum Jubilee Purple and White livery with the legend “Celebrating Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee 1952-2022” in 2022. This livery was presented by DB Cargo at the 2022 Toton Depot Open Day on 18th June. In the same month of 2022, a notable journey was made where 67007 hauled the Royal Train with No. 67006 at the rear. The locomotive ran from Wolverton to Windsor to pick up the Royal Family and transported them to their destination of Edinburgh before travelling south back to Wolverton.

Our model has a royal DB Cargo Purple livery with a Celebrating Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee legend, just like on the prototypical Class 67 locomotive. Special Platinum Jubilee logos adorn the bodysides. 'Queen's Jubilee' features a 5-pole skew-wound motor.
This model will feature directional and cab lighting. Night and day headlights will also be included.

All variants of the Class 66 lighting have been tooled for both UK and European variants. The headlights will be prototypical for your model.

All the Class 66 models have 12 axles for the current pick-up and both bogies are motor-driven. The UK variants of the Class 66 will not be fitted with traction tyres, but tyred wheelsets are available as accessories.

European variants will be fitted with one traction tyre per bogie ex-works.

History

The Class 66 is one of the most ubiquitous diesel classes in the UK. 480 examples were built for the UK market with additional examples being imported from other countries pools to bolster the amount in service in the UK. The Class 66 is a progression of the privately commissioned Class 59 that Foster Yeoman had constructed to replace their aging and failing BREL locomotives. The Class 66 shares the same body as the 59 but has uprated internals.

In May 1996 EWS placed an order for 250 units to be built in London, Ontario. These would set EWS back £375 million, with the first units arriving relatively quickly in early 1998. The locomotives would be in service from the point they touched down at Newport Docks, with the locomotives shipped already filled with water and fuel. The last such example arrived in the UK in spring 2016.

Locomotive number 66789 is a named example of the class, named in honour of British Rail who managed the national network between 1948 and 1997, dates which are also commemorated on the name plate. The locomotive is in the employ of GB Railfreight, who have had the locomotive painted in BR Blue with a large logo and yellow ends, a glimpse perhaps of what a Class 66 locomotive may have looked like in BR service.

Power Car 43155 entered service in January 1981 and was overhauled by Brush between April and October 2006. With the introduction of the new Class 800 and 802 IEP units on the Great Western Mainline GWR cascaded remaining IC125 sets to rural routes shortening them to 4 passenger coach ‘Castle’ sets.

The last of the class, 46257 City of Salford entered traffic on 19 May 1948 at Camden shed straight into British Railways' service, albeit that the livery was the lined LMS black with an M prefix to the BR number. Black gave way to BR Green on 10 December 1952 and by this time the Pony truck had been changed for a welded type, but the addition of AWS on 6 August 1959 cluttered the appearance beneath the cab on the left hand side.

Withdrawn from service on 12 September 1964 from Carlisle shed, 46257 City of Salford was moved to Preston for storage until disposal.
