Good Things Come in Small Packages
Spring 1940: watching on as Nazi German forces swept through Western Europe, U.S. military planners concluded that a replacement was needed for their M2A4, which was rapidly looking obsolete. Their immediate answer was the M3 light tank, which began production in March 1941, the original design employing a riveted hull and 250hp engine, with firepower provided by the 37mm main gun. Late production variants had a new lowered turret without cupola, with some later models having their sponson machine guns removed. The M3 not only fought in U.S. colors in North Africa, it was also supplied to the Red Army via Britain, serving in reconnaissance and infantry support roles.

The Object 490A was created as an alternative variant for the Object 490. The 490A Buntar was suggested in order to provide the vehicle with one more crew member as well as an externally mounted gun. The biggest change from the Object 490 to the 490A was the completely redesigned turret as well as minor changes to the chassis. The project was cancelled at the end of 1984 due to the newer Object 477 Molot program beginning. The design required increased gun power, so the KV-3 chose the Navy's B-34 107mm naval gun and improved it into a ZIS-6 tank gun with an initial velocity of 800 meters per second. When launching armor-piercing bombs, UBR The Model-420 armor-piercing projectile weighs nearly 19 kilograms and can penetrate 167 millimeters of armor at a distance of 500 meters.
