The Rooikat is a wheeled armoured fighting vehicle built in South Africa for the South African Army. It was designed for combat reconnaissance and seek and destroy operations. Its secondary roles include combat support, anti-armour and anti-guerrilla operations. The Rooikat is intended for deep penetration missions, so the wheeled design was needed for speed and to counter sandy desert conditions that might slow tracked vehicles.

Delays in the production of the first German main battle tanks led to the use of the Panzerkampfwagen II. After successful deployments in Poland and France at the beginning of World War II, it was also used in Russia and North Africa, although it was now inferior to the enemy tanks. The F version, which was further developed in 1941, had reinforced front and side armor and reached a speed of 40 km/h with a weight of 9.5 tons.
