ICM 48196 1/48 Mitsubishi Ki-21-Ia Sally Japanese Heavy Bomber

Japanese Heavy Bomber

The Ki-21 pre-production bomber made its first flight in late 1936. Serial production of its first modification, the Ki-21-Ia, began in 1938, the same year the aircraft made its combat debut. Air units of the Imperial Japanese Army, which were equipped with the Ki-21-Ia, were involved in active combat operations in China. In the spring of 1939, the Ki-21-Ia took part in combat operations against the Red Army on the Halhin Gol River. The aircraft’s combat payload of 1,000 kg was a good indicator of its time and allowed for massive bombing strikes, and the defensive tactics developed by the pilots of these bombers in air battles resulted in their fairly low losses compared to other types of aircraft. After more advanced models were produced, the first modification bombers were transferred to training units, although a certain number of Ki-21-Ia continued to be operated by combat units. American pilots, who gave Japanese aircraft their own names, referred to Ki-21 bombers as ‘Sally’.

The light and cheap J-3 Cub aeroplanes were behind the development of the civil aviation in the USA in the late 1930s. With the end of the world crisis the interest in aviation increased and the J-3 was an ideal type for the basic training and tourist flying. With WW2 coming, the J-3 came into the sights of the military and the USAAF decided to test the type in the artillery spotting and short range recon roles. Needless to say the J-3 succeeded and the production for the military commenced under the designation L-4 Grasshopper.

The model kit comes on two grey styrene sprues and one with the clear parts. The decal sheet offers markings for three airframes. The yellow one portrays a pre-war machine and is accompanied by two military machines. The first of these was an ex-civilian airplane wearing olive drab coat over the still partially visible yellow overall. The other military-flown machine is in the standard olive drab and neutral grey colours.

The F-82 Twin Mustang is a reciprocal twin-engine double-seat fighter developed in the United States and operated by the U.S. Air Force.

During World War II, the U.S. Army Air Force requested North American to develop a double-seat fighter that could take turns to reduce the burden on pilots during long-range missions. Therefore, North American decided to develop a twin-body fighter that connects two P-51s as P-82 in order to shorten the development period. The P-82, which first flew in June 1945, was not deployed to troops during the war, but as a derivative, the long-range fighter type F-82E, the night fighter type F-821F/G, and the F-82H for cold regions was made, and in the Korean War that began in 1950, jet fighters were operated in situations where long-range combat and night combat were not possible.
