Hornby TT3013M TT BR Class 50 Co-Co 50007 Sir Edward Elgar

106.00 $

The Class 50 locomotives, built by English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry in Newton-le-Willows between 1967-1968 were the last purpose-designed mixed-traffic locomotive built in the UK. 50 examples were built in total. Upon their introduction they were used on the West Coast Main Line (WCML). The aim was to speed-up passenger timings on the then non-electrified portion up to Glasgow, and to haul express passenger trains at 100 mph. By 1974, the entire line had been electrified so the locomotives were re-deployed to other regions as had been planned. When delivered, the Class 50s were leased to British Rail by a subsidiary of English Electric. They were later sold to the British Railways Board.

The Class 50s proved to be incredibly powerful, indeed following the full electrification of the WCML and the introduction of more powerful DMUs in the late 1980’s they were almost pointlessly powerful, and they began to be withdrawn as their roles were handed to more efficient DMUs. All examples of the Class were named which was rather unusual for corporate BR diesel locomotives, and in the end 18 examples have been preserved.

50007 ‘Sir Edward Elgar’ started life as D407 in 1968, being named Hercules after a Royal Navy ship in 1978. The locomotive would go on to become Sir Edward Elgar in 1984, a name that it would keep into recent preservation, carrying it from withdrawal in 1991 until 2014 when it reclaimed its original name of Hercules. Hercules is now based at the Severn Valley Railway.

Specification

Item Length - Without Packaging (cm): 17.4

Item Height - Without Packaging (cm): 3.3

Item Width - Without Packaging (cm): 2.3

Item Weight - Without Packaging: 0.18

Item Scale: 1:120 Scale

Finish: Painted

Colour: Green

Gauge: TT

DCC Status: Next 18 Socket (NEM 662)

Operator: BR

Designer: English Electric

Wheel Configuration: Co-Co

Livery: BR GWR Style Green

Minimum Curve (mm): Radius 2

Motor: 5 Pole

Number of Parts: 1

Class: Class 50

Hornby OO L&MR Centenary 1930 Lion Train Pack - Era 1 R30232

187.00 $

L&MR locomotive No.57, 'Lion' was built by Todd, Kitson & Laird at their Leeds Works in 1837.

In 1841, 'Lion' was rebuilt at Edge Hill and given a new boiler together with longer frames, new cylinders and valve gear.

The L&MR was absorbed into the Grand Junction Railway in 1845 which a year later became part of the London & North Western Railway (LNWR) and it was at that time 'Lion' received the number 116.

'Lion' continued in service until 1857 and was eventually sold in 1859 to the Mersey Docks & Harbour Board to be used on their internal railway. Approximately fifteen years later, 'Lion's' duties had changed because it was then being used as a pumping engine at the Graving Dock facility. The 'Lion' remained until it was replaced by an electric pump in 1928 and it was at this time that the Liverpool Engineering Society became aware of its existence.

The task to rebuild 'Lion' was given to the Crewe Works who built a new tender using as a basis a scrapped Furness Railway locomotive tender. Other work included a new chimney, wheel splashers, footplate, plus numerous other parts including boiler tubes. Moving away from the original build, a controversial copper cover was fitted over the high firebox to simulate an arc de cloitre firebox, a design feature that dated back to the first half of the 19th century.

By 1930 the newly refurbished 'Lion' became one of the star attractions of the Liverpool & Manchester Railway Centenary exhibition in September of that year. Using replica coaches and carriages of the period 'Lion' offered trips around a circular track at the Wavertree Playground.

The L&MR No. 57, 'Lion' included in this pack represents the locomotive as it appeared in the 1930 L&MR Centenary Exhibition and includes coaches and carriages as used at that time.

The R40371 Coach & Carriage pack available separately features extra vehicles to simulate the whole train as used during the Centenary Exhibition.

Specification

Item Length - Without Packaging (cm): 30

Item Height - Without Packaging (cm): 4

Item Width - Without Packaging (cm): 3

Item Weight - Without Packaging: 0.13

Item Scale: 1:76 Scale 00 Gauge

Finish: Painted

Colour: Multiple

DCC Status: Next 18 Socket (NEM 662)

Operator: L&MR

Designer: Robert Stephenson

Wheel Configuration: 0-4-2

Livery: L&MR Green and Gold

Minimum Curve (mm): Radius 2

Motor: 3 Pole Skew wound

Number of Parts: 4

Buffer Type: Moulded Dumb Buffers

Coupling Type: Chain

Hornby Decoder Compatibility Primary: HM7000-N18TXS: Bluetooth® & DCC Sound Decoder (Next18-pin)

Hornby R3984 OO LNER P2 Class 2-8-22002 Earl Marischal

175.00 $

The London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) Edinburgh to Aberdeen route had steep gradients and tight curves and the express passenger service was usually worked by a double header of two small engines. To overcome this situation, Nigel Gresley, Chief Mechanical Engineer (CME) of the LNER began designing a new locomotive at the LNER Doncaster Works in 1932. The 2-8-2 configured locomotive was given the classification P2 and had four driving axles for greater adhesion, an A3 type boiler and a Kylchap type blastpipe/chimney system. A total of six of the Class were built. As the first two were returned to Doncaster for repairs they were fitted with streamlined fronts similar to the A4 Pacifics. The last four to be built were outshopped with streamlined fronts. By 1944 the whole Class had been withdrawn.

2002 'Earl Marischal' was the second P2 to be constructed and differed from its predecessor in a few key ways. No. 2002 was fitted with more conventional Walschaerts/Gresley valve gear which changed the locomotive's characteristics substantially necessitating the instillation of large smoke deflectors, whilst the original front of the casing had its leading edge cut back 12".

'Earl Marischal' entered traffic in October 1934 and soon began working Doncaster to Kings Cross trains before being transferred to Scotland in June 1935. It was later overhauled and streamlined to match the later members of the P2 class before being withdrawn from traffic and rebuilt as a Pacific locomotive in June 1944 having completed 360,907 miles as a 2-8-2 type locomotive.

Specification

Item Length - Without Packaging (cm): 29.6

Item Height - Without Packaging (cm): 5

Item Width - Without Packaging (cm: 3.5

Item Weight - Without Packaging: 0.48

Item Scale: 1:76 Scale 00 Gauge

License: No

Finish: Painted

Colour: Green

Gauge: OO

DCC Status: DCC Ready 21 pin socket

Operator: LNER

Designer: Gresley

Wheel Configuration: 2-8-2

Livery: LNER Apple green

Minimum Curve (mm): Radius 2

Motor: 5 Pole Skew wound

Number of Parts: 1

Class: P2 Class
