The relatively light-weight 21-ton Type 62 light tank (also known by its industrial designator WZ-132) was in many ways a scaled-down version of the Type 59, and the 2 tanks shared many similar features. The cast and welded Type 62 turret was slightly smaller with nearly identical hatches and fittings. The road wheels and tracks were smaller and lighter than those of the Type 59, but were of a similar overall design. The Type 62 was designed mainly for use in armored divisions stationed in China's southern hilly areas, and was intended to carry out reconnaissance missions and engage enemy light armored vehicles, as well as perform other combat tasks that would make use of the vehicle's mobility, firepower and protection.

Half-track is a vehicle that utilizes both tracks and wheels as running gear. Early 30s,The U.S. Army purchased a license to develop half-tracks and experimented with half-track adapters. The mobility of the vehicle improved markedly when using these adapters. The best known American half-tracks were the M series made as a standardized design by Autocar, Diamond T, International and White. The M series had a similar front end to the White M3A1 Scout Car but used more powerful engines: a 147bhp 6.3-liter White AX in the Autocar, Diamond T, and White, and a 143bhp 1HC in the International. Each version had four-speed gearboxes with two-speed transfer boxes and drive to the front axle as well as the tracked bogie. The M series half-tracks were widely used by US forces in most theatres of the war, and were also supplied under the Lend-Lease Program to Great Britain, Canada and the Soviet Union. A total of 41,170 were made. The M16 quadmount version of the half-track proved very successful and became the standard light anti-aircraft armored vehicle.

Named after the ancient Hebrew war chariot, Israel’s Merkava tank was forged by experience on the battlefield as well as the painful political realities facing the Jewish state. After enthusiastically providing the UK with valuable data gathered during 2 years of intense evaluation of the Chieftain tank, The Israelis were denied the weapon after political objections by wealthy Arab states resulted in the British cancellation of their agreement in 1969. This sudden turn of events instigated the ultimate decision in Israel to rely on themselves and produce a local tank.

Drawing on experience gained operating U.S. & British tanks in heavy combat, the Merkava was designed after the Yom Kippur war of 1973, and after several prototypes were tested and improved, the new tank went into production in 1977. Design features included a troop compartment in the rear accessed by a unique split hatch reminiscent of APC’s, a 908 Hp Teledyne Continental AVDS 1790-6A diesel engine mounted in the front of the hull for increased crew protection from the front, and a flat, arrow-shaped turret housing a powerful license-produced fully-stabilized version of the US rifled 105-mm M68 tank gun. Up to 62 rounds can be carried, including APFSDS, HEAT, HE-FRAG, and smoke rounds. Secondary armament comprised of two US 7.62 mm machine-guns and a third heavy Browning .50 caliber could be mounted on top of the commander cupola. An external 60 mm mortar could be fired by an operator from the nearby hatch. The tank features a Laser Range Finder and a digital fire control system, and enjoys NBC protection and an automatic fire extinguishing system. The Merkava can carry up to 10 fully equipped troops, as well as its crew of 4, consisting of the driver, gunner, loader, and commander. A total of 250 tanks were produced until 1981.

Features

Takom 5003 1/72 Russian Army Tractors KZKT-537L and MAZ-537 1+1

In June 1954, the Council of Ministers of the USSR adopted a resolution on the creation of a special design bureau for the development of powerful military tractors with the possibility of subsequent modification in the civilian industry. At the Minsk Automobile Plant, a Special Design Bureau [SKB] was organized, under the direction of the chief designer Boris L. Shaposhnik, and an effort was made to develop an improved heavy tractor based on the proven MAZ-535. At the end of 1958, the first prototypes appeared, which successfully withstood factory, and then state interdepartmental tests. On March 29, 1959, the first truck MAZ-537 was assembled at the Minsk Automobile Plant, and from the beginning of 1960 began serial production of new MAZ-537 wheeled tractors, which were adopted for service on July 30, 1962. At the end of 1963, design documentation was transferred to the Uralselmash plant in the city of Kurgan (renamed the Kurgan Wheel Tractor Plant (KZKT) by the order of the Minister of Automotive and Tractor Industry of June 11, 1966), where the MAZ-535 family had been manufactured. At that time, the total output of MAZ-537 family tractors in Minsk and MAZ-535 in Kurgan reached 350-400 pieces per year.

The MAZ-537 is powered by a standard 525 hp tank engine tucked behind a forward control cab that provides seating for the driver and three passengers. The simple & reliable design is largely based on the MAZ-535B tractor. The MAZ-537 differs in a sturdier frame with an increased wheel base and features a more powerful engine, with modifications to the cooling and lubrication systems, fuel and air supply, and the exhausts. The engine preheater was moved under the cab to the frame, and its outlet extension was shortened and withdrawn through the front frame. The suspension design remains virtually unchanged, but the front wheel torsion struts were enlarged in both length and diameter, and the brake system was thoroughly improved. In comparison with the predecessor, the compressor drive installed on the overdrive was changed - to be powered by two belts making it simpler and more technologically efficient. The new tractor did not have a winch and a power take-off box, which was later installed on its modifications.

The MAZ-537 tank transporter can tow semi-trailers with medium and main battle tanks with a maximum weight of 50,000 kg both on roads and rugged terrain. It is still capable of towing any MBT currently in service with the Russian Army today. The reliable MAZ 537 "Hurricane" was widely used by the regular troops for the transportation of various long-range combat systems and has been exported to serve in the armed forces of many countries. For the creation of the MAZ-535 and MAZ-537 tractor families, chief designer of the SKB MAZ Boris L. Shaposhnik and a group of his associates were awarded the State Prize of the USSR in 1968.

Dragon 6261 1/35 Mechanised Towing 15cm s.IG.33 nfantry Gun w/Crew

$

Germany's standard heavy infantry gun throughout WWII was the schweres Infanterie Geschu"tz 33 (contracted to s.IG.33), of 15cm caliber. It was a larger counterpart to the 7.5cm le.IG.18 infantry gun. Approved for service in 1933, the s.IG.33 was originally designed to be horse-drawn. However, later models were especially designed for towing behind vehicles such as trucks or halftracks. Thus they had pressed-steel wheels clad in solid rubber tires, plus they had air brakes.

At 1750kg the s.IG.33 was quite heavy for use by infantrymen, but it could fire 15cm rounds such as HE, smoke and hollow-charge (for the antitank role) to a maximum range of 4700m. Perhaps most interestingly of all was the 90kg Stielgranate 42 demolition round designed to destroy obstacles such as bunkers. Dragon has developed a 1/35 scale Smart Kit of the s.IG.33, and the contents of the box specifically replicate one of the later infantry gun models that were destined for motorized towing.

The kit includes an aluminum gun barrel with realistically rendered rifling. The detailed hydraulic recoil system allows the gun to be posed in normal position or in full recoil, plus different elevations for the gun barrel can be chosen. The breech can also be shown open or closed, depending on which part the modeler selects. The highly detailed gun kit comes replete with a number of accessories. These include a six-man gun crew ready to fire the weapon. A range of DS parts contribute useful components like protective ammo wicker cases and wicker ground mats. As a bonus to several 15cm ammo rounds already on offer, the kit even boasts the Stielgranate 42 stick bomb demolition round. This is a masterfully produced kit of an important German artillery piece, and with all the extras Dragon has included, it represents a very desirable package.
