The Corsair, which the Japanese called Whispering Death, is a legend of the Second World War. The Vought F4U Corsair was powered by a Pratt & Whitney 2,000 HP radial engine. This powerful engine required a large Hamilton Standard 13' 4" Propeller to use the full power of the engine. The F4U was the first American fighter aircraft to exceed 400 MPH. This model faithfully recreates the F4U-4B Corsair in a 1/48 scale.

Carrying on the Fight

With its combination of high speed and heavy armament, the Corsair was a formidable aircraft active in the latter half of WWII. As a versatile bird it had a number of variants, among them the F4U-1D, which was the first Corsair to be officially deployed on U.S. aircraft carriers. Features unique to the F4U-1D included a frame-less semi-bubble canopy, thicker propeller blade roots, a raised pilot's seat and more. Armament took the form of six 12.7mm machine guns mounted in the gull wing, with a pylon under each side of the root allowing it to carry two 1,000lb bombs or drop tanks. The outer wing could be fitted with 4 rockets on each side. The F4U-1D was an important presence on its carriers, joining attacks on the Japanese archipelago in February 1945 as U.S. forces advanced.

This is the D variant of the popular Corsair World War II fighter plane. It uses new parts to recreate features specific to the F4U-1D, which was the first Corsair to be cleared for use on aircraft carriers. This fighter-bomber could carry drop tanks on new hard points under the wing root, and up to 8 rockets under the outer wing. It provided invaluable close support for ground troops during landings in places such as the Philippines and Okinawa, and continued to serve after WWII, in Korea.

Special Hobby 72367 1/72 P-40D Warhawk Kittyhawk Mk.I Four Guns

The P-40B/C Hawk/Tomahawk Mk.I/II fighter planes produced by Curtiss in the early war years and delivered both to the USAAF and their forces of the Allies lacked the performance of British fighters and most importantly of the German opponents. So the designers at Curtiss were faced with the necessity to improve the plane rather extensively and power it with the new vesion of the Allison engine, the V-1710-39 type. The emerging P-40D Warhawk/Kittyhawk Mk.I was to be the first type of this second generation of fighters. A total of only slightly above 40 was eventually produced, being armed with four wing machine guns. On the production line, the type was soon replaced by a futher improved and mass-produced P-40E Warhawk/Kittyhawk Mk.Ia which mainly differed by having six gun armament.

Despite onl very few P-40Ds were produced, our kit set is still very atrractive. It offers a mount of Neville Duke, the highest-scoring RAF pilot of the Meditteranean, a plane that wore the famous shark teeth on its nose, the second option is another MTO based Kittyhawk, this one as operated by the 3 Sqn RAAF. The third option is an ex-US machine captured by the Japanese on the Philippines island of Mindanao which therefore wears Japanese markings, a yellow nose section and also a very nice looking shark mouth. The final scheme is that of a US machine as flown during a pre-war military exercises and bearing temporary applied markings.
